SKIING AND ROSSLAND

Rossland Gold Rush in 1890
Skiing and Rossland were two words which were destined to meet! 1890 marked the year when gold-copper ore deposits were discovered on the south side of Red Mountain, and the famous Le Roi mine claim sparked a gold rush that attracted people from around the world!

Olaus Jeldness pioneers skiing in Rossland in 1896

It was a time when legends such as "Olaus Jeldness" would launch the first ever downhill ski race in the area in 1896. The race went from the top of Red Mountain to the present day site of the Rossland Mining Museum.

Present day
Red Mountain, now Red Mountain Resort is actually made up of two mountains - Red and Granite. Combined, they offer 1,585 skiable acres amidst the resort's total 4,200 acre area. Known for “big powder” days and few if any line-ups, Red Mountain Resort has added a mountain bike park, and has plans for new lifts and to open even more skiier terrain.
