Mothers Day

My mother is no longer with us. She was one of my best friends, teachers, coaches and supporters. As we approach mothers day I can not help but think about her. Days before she passed away we were on the phone talking and she asked if I had bought a lottery ticket. I said no and explained to her that the chances of winning the lottery were 15,753,321 to 1. Without a hesitation she said, “sure, but you never know.” She was an optimist and always poked fun at me about the lottery. Well now I buy a lottery ticket once a week and not because I will ever win but because it is a simple act and well… I suppose I am buying it for her.

Do something for your mom this mothers day. You can even do something like buying a lottery ticket. “You never know”

PS Redstone has a Mothers day Brunch. Call 250 362-9140 for reservations.

It’s not you it’s your putter

Do you fight with your putter? Constantly pushing putts right, or maybe pulling them left. Possibly leave too many short of the hole or occasionally blast them 4 feet past. Let’s be honest there’s a possibility that it’s ‘pilot error’ and a technical improvement could make all the difference and as such a lesson could make all the difference. But there’s also the strong possibility that your putter doesn’t match your stroke and changing to a properly fit putter could make all the difference. Most golfers know that putters come in blade and mallet designs in too many models and styles to number. What most of you don’t know is that all these different designs aren’t just to satisfy individual visual preference. In fact one of the most popular putters available today (and most expensive) fits less than 15% of the people who buy it. Might look good in the bag but it actually will make them worse! Each putter has performance characteristics that work best when used with a particular path, plane and speed of stroke. We have the tools here at Redstone to help you find your perfect putter and stroke. Combining CPGA instruction with state of the art Digital Putters Analyzers we can groove your stroke and match it to the perfect putter design for you. Inquire at our Proshop for information on booking a fitting session or lesson to help you get the most out of your flat stick in 2015.

Upcoming Lesson Programs:

Ladies Power Clinics start next Monday May 11 at 5:15PM. This three week program focuses 30 minutes each week on getting the most out of your tee shots.

Ladies Game Improvement Clinics also start the evening of May 11th at 6PM. These 1 hour lessons over three weeks will cover all aspects of the game for the shortest putts to the longest drives. A fantastic way to start off the season in a fun and social environment while building up your game for your best season ever.
Junior After School Clinics continue to run every Thursday afternoon at 4PM. Each session is $10 and no registration is required, drop-ins welcome. Designed for ages 10+ this is great way for youth to get involved in golf, a sport they can play their entire lives while getting some quality CPGA instruction.

Too much work not enough golf?

These days we all (Unless we’re retired) rush too work and check our emails to start our day. During the day we answer emails, texts and phone calls. In fact, its likely that we are working outside of work because the cell phone is in our pocket and people can reach us at any time. Ever get this text?, “sorry too bother you but can you give me a call?”. Personal time has been replaced with 24 hour access. My father just laughs because he doesn’t have a PDA. He says people golf less because they work too much. He also says that people don’t take enough time for themselves and golf is not the only thing they have slowed down doing. I checked it out. In fact in 2014 Golf was up slightly and really over the last several years the number of new players are replacing players who have retired from the sport. So not net loss but no real gain.

At Redstone we want to change that. We created the twilight membership for working people that want to golf but need to work. It’s just $699 and the only restriction is you must golf at 2pm or later. This is a great intro to golfing at Redstone.

See you at Redstone

Real Estate at Redstone

Have you had a chance to drive through the Redstone subdivision lately? There are four new homes going up this spring with more on the way. I wanted to blog some information because I had a guest in and they were unsure of what we have available. We are currently working on the website with updates but here is the short version. We have three lots in the upper subdivision lots 8,9 and 10. We have three lots 500 metres from the Redstone driveway and we have just received approval for 5 lots near the entrance driveway. There is one 3 bedroom home being constructed and is near completion with availability at the end of May.

If you have not seen the growth in the subdivision we are now up to 47 homes built!

We are creating a specific list of people interested in Real estate at Redstone. As information becomes available we will email it our. Please email cary@redstoneresort.com if you want to be on the list.

What makes you scratch your head?

It all started with the internet, then email, facebook, texting, youtube, on demand video and video games.  I have been encouraging people to get our children playing organized sport instead of playing with their PDA’s.  Heck it doesn’t need to be organized just play.  Obviously owning a Golf course I would love to see them golfing. But I really don’t mind if they never play golf as long as they play something.  Canadian Tire has a great program.  See below.

“Participating in sport helps kids develop physical and social skills. It helps build self-esteem. By helping kids get into the game, we’re equipping them with determination. And we’re giving them confidence that will extend beyond practices and games.

No kid should be left on the sidelines but in Canada 1 in 3 families cannot afford to enroll their kids in organized sports. That’s almost 750,000 kids every year who want to play, but just can’t.

Jumpstart aims to change that. Across Canada, Jumpstart has 330 Chapters, which are made up of volunteers from across the Canadian Tire enterprise and local community groups, such as local Parks and Recreation Departments, Boys and Girls Clubs and the YMCA/YWCA, among others.

Money raised within each Chapter stays within the community and goes directly to help kids participate in sport, dance or other organized physical activities. Jumpstart funding helps families that need a financial hand with registration, equipment and/or transportation costs.”

Lets get kids playing again!

On Saturday May 16th we have a charity Tournament called Jumpstart.  $10 dollars from every entry goes to Jumpstart.  Register by following this link.  https://redstoneresort.com/dining-and-events/events/.

Canadian Dollar

We call it the loonie and in the US they call it the greenback.  The Canadian dollar has dropped or the US dollar has risen?  Well the US economy is strengthening at a pace that is greater than the Canadian economy so it stands to reason the US economy is the main reason its increase when compare to other world currencies.  What does that have to do with golf?   Value in Canada should be higher for any number of goods or services like golf.  At .79 cents Canadian to $1 US the rate of exchange is $1 US gets you $1.27 Canadian.    Canadians will want to rediscover Canadian courses because value in Canada has risen so much compared to their counter parts in the US.  On the other hand US golfers may want to look to the great white north this year to take advantage of great golf at great value.  If you want to discover Redstone call 250 362-9141 and book your tee time now.

PS.  If your coming from the US our spring rate is $45.75 CDN or $36 US.

Old Hockey players

I am an old Hockey Player.  As such, I have a pile of stories from College where I played for the University of Alaska Anchorage, Seawolves and various Junior Teams across BC.  What I can tell you without getting into trouble with my kids and spouse is hockey is full of colorful characters with generous personalities and strong loyalties. Just as I was sitting down to right this local assistant Coach with the Trail Smoke Eaters, Barry Zanier walked into the Golfshop.  I snapped a picture and looked up his stats in the WIHL.  He played for the Nelson Leafs his last season and his stats are below.  They go games, goals, assists and Pims.  I am sure Barry has a mind full of stories back from his playing days.  Great memories from a brief moment in our individual history.    What I have always wanted to do is get a bunch of old players together and listen in on stories from when they played.  On May 23 this year the Trail Commercial Hockey League is having their golf tournament at Redstone.  I asked if I could invite teams from Nelson and Castlegar to throw teams into the tournament.   If your interested in playing 18 holes at Redstone and you can get three other guys together that played hockey at a high level or played in your local commercial league, junior league, semi pro, college or pro and you want to visit with guys that played the game then this might be your thing.

My cell is 250 368-1688

Oh yeah its $69 bucks for 18 holes cart and diner.  Any side betting is strictly forbidden accept Kyle Mace can’t hit a ball straight so long drive must be on a fairway.

The history of Hockey in this area is awesome.  Below are Barry’s stats and a brief note on his league.

1984-85 Nelson Maple Leafs WIHL 29 12 18 30 28
The Western International Hockey League was a senior amateur hockey league that operated from 1946 until the mid-1980’s. It was located primarily in British Columbia, and evolved out of the West Kootenay Hockey League.

The WIHL was formed in the summer of 1946 with teams in the British Columbian cities of Kimberley, Trail, Nelson, and two US-based cities, Spokane Washington and Los Angeles California. The team’s championship trophy was known as the George Montgomery – Dinah Shore Trophy, as it was donated by that famous entertainment duo.

Since the league was organized in Canada, it played for the Allan Cup, awarded to the top Canadian Senior hockey team. It also played for the Savage Cup, awarded to the top Senior British Columbian hockey team. These two trophies occasionally ended up in the United States, with Spokane winning the honors.

Do you Remember PONG?

Ipad’s, Ipods, Androids and snapchat.  When I was a kid we had a game called Pong.  Do you remember Pong?   It was a white dot (Ball) and a straight line (bat).  You played against another player or the program.  My point is it was fairly boring and most of us played a bit and then went outside and played.

Now between video games, PDA’s and Netflix kids and adults have so many choices we are choosing to play inside in front of a device at an alarming rate.

The health and development of our kids is really at stake here and that is why Redstone supports Canadian Tire’s Jumpstart program.  Jumpstart is a program to get kids at risk into organized sport.  Jumpstart provides kids at risk financial support to join a sport of there choosing.  Jumpstart is a great incentive for us all to get up from or devices and play.  On May 16 play in Redstone’s Jumpstart Tournament.  Call 250 362-9141 or register at https://redstoneresort.com/canadian-tire-jump-start-mens-and-womens-open/
